First Russia–US–Ukraine Trilateral Meeting

On January 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the territorial issue, the core of ending the war in Ukraine, would be discussed at the trilateral meeting between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine to be held in the UAE (United Arab Emirates).

According to Reuters and AFP, Zelensky said in a messenger conversation with journalists, “The Donbas issue is the key. Today and tomorrow, the three parties will discuss how each side views this issue.”

On January 22, US President Donald Trump and Zelensky met at the Davos Forum and negotiated a plan to end the war.

After the meeting, Trump said, “(The talks) went well,” and “The war must be ended.”

Following the US–Ukraine summit, the US envoys Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow and held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin for about four hours.

After the meeting, Russian presidential aide Yuri Viktorovich Ushakov commented, “It was a particularly meaningful and constructive conversation.”

Meanwhile, ahead of the trilateral talks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized, “Russia’s position is that Ukrainian armed forces must leave the territory of the Donbas,” adding, “They must pull back from there,” and stressing, “This is a very important condition.”
