Call for solidarity against repression and for mobilization for a government that upholds the Constitution
For months, politicians from Fratelli d’Italia have been pressuring Minister Piantedosi and the police to “dismantle the Carc Party”. This is simply because the Carc Party dared to write on its flyers that we must “oust the Meloni government and replace it with a government that upholds the 1948 Constitution”. Consequently, on the orders of Public Prosecutor Maurizio De Marco of the Naples Prosecutor’s Office, on 21 April, DIGOS raided the homes of six comrades in Naples and Florence.
The charges are built on Article 270/bis (subversive association and terrorism), a law that the Italian Republic inherited directly from fascism. It is the very law that fascism used to imprison Gramsci until his death.
The Naples Prosecutor’s “terrorism construct” is a complete fabrication. It criminalizes the normal activities of organized political activism: political education, organization and propaganda.
It is also significant that the Naples Prosecutor’s Office considers it an aggravating factor that a communist party provides ideological, political, organizational and cultural education for the youth, especially minors. Clearly, young people are not supposed to be active protagonists in the transformation of society. Instead, they are expected to be passive targets of war propaganda, imposed through the presence of the Army and law enforcement in schools at all levels and through ‘school trips’ to military bases and arms fairs. They must be willing to be exploited in the meat grinder of school-work programs, where they sometimes lose their lives.
The attack on the Carc Party is not an isolated incident. The Meloni government constantly incites the judiciary and the repressive state apparatus to target those who have participated in the popular movement in solidarity with the Palestinian people, against the World War III and against NATO.
Fines, criminal charges, city bans and restrictive measures have rained down and continue to rain down without cease. It is pure retaliation against the movement that is making the Meloni government shake.
Last autumn, under the slogan ‘Block Everything’, the organizers of this movement became, for millions of people, a more credible and responsible point of reference than state institutions and the government itself.
After flooding the streets, in March this movement filled the ballot boxes for the referendum on justice, delivering yet another slap in the face to a government that systematically violates the Constitution.
The attack on the Carc Party is not an isolated case. These terrorism charges are part of an attempt to criminalize and isolate the Carc from the rest of the popular movement. Today the Carc Party has been targeted, but the ‘terrorism construct’ can be used against any organization or collective that openly states its aim of replacing the government of those nostalgic for fascism with a government that actually enforces the Constitution.
Solidarity is the most effective response to these attempts at criminalization and isolation. We want to thank all the parties, political and trade union organizations, workers’ and people’s organizations, movements and individuals who have already written to us expressing their solidarity. Hundreds of messages that warm the heart, both for what they express and because they are clear proof that the attempts at criminalization and isolation have shattered against the wall of solidarity.
It is our intention to return what we have received into the mobilization to oust the Meloni government and replace it with a government that implements the progressive core of the 1948 Constitution. We want to use the investigation against us to take a step forward. Therefore:
-we call on all active, mobilized and conscious forces standing with the anti-repression struggle – individuals, workers’ and people’s organizations, trade unions and political organizations, elected representatives at all levels, figures from civil society, the cultural sector and the community associations, and sincere democrats – to keep expressing solidarity with the Carc Party in their public statements at meetings, in the streets, within institutions, on social media, etc. We ask those who have already spoken out to keep doing so, and those who have not to start doing now. Take a stand. Choose your side;
-we call on all active, mobilized and conscious forces standing with the anti-repression struggle to sign this appeal and include their contact details so we can stay in touch. This is more than just a gesture of solidarity: we are planning to organize debates, in-depth discussion and initiatives against repression; we will invite EVERYONE, but indicating your contact is a first sign of interest and helps us to proceed more efficiently;
-We call on everyone for a financial contribution to replace the equipment stolen from our comrades under the pretext of searches and investigations. These are computers, phones and other devices without which political activity is NOT compromised, but is slowed down and hindered. We rely on the help and support of the popular masses to repair this damage as soon as possible.
Choose your side. Let the ‘terrorism construct backfire on those who wanted and devised them. And those who wanted and devised them are the main instigators of the violations of the Constitution against workers and the popular masses. Oust the Meloni government.
