Israel Bombs Lebanon Ahead of Iran-USA Peace Agreement

On June 14, despite the ongoing ceasefire, the Israeli military airstruck the southern suburbs of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, killing at least three people.

The Lebanese state news agency NNA reported that an additional 15 people were injured in the attack.

The Israeli military claimed in a statement that the airstrike targeted milestones belonging to Hezbollah in the area.

Meanwhile, this airstrike occurred just hours after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for strikes on Dahiyeh, despite the ceasefire that has been in effect since April 17.

According to Lebanese authorities, since March 2, Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,700 people, injured over 11,500, and displaced more than 1.5 million.

Iran warned that if such attacks continue, peace negotiations with the USA could be suspended.

Mohammad Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, pointed out on social media, “Israeli attacks on southern Beirut showed the United States either lacks the will or the ability to fulfill its commitments.”

The Iranian military also stated, “We will never tolerate Israeli attacks on Lebanon.”

US President Donald Trump announced regarding the airstrike, “This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran. We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down. There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel.”

Meanwhile, on June 13, Trump mentioned on social media that the agreement with Iran was scheduled to be signed on Sunday.

According to Iranian sources, the final decision on the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) is currently “under review,” and Iran has not yet announced its final decision on the proposed MOU.

The negotiation process, mediated by Pakistan, focuses on ending hostilities between Iran and the USA, opening the Strait of Hormuz, and reaching an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

As the negotiation reached its final stage, Yaïr Lapid, former Israeli Prime Minister and current opposition leader, said on June 13 that Israel would not be able to achieve its war goals under the newly forming agreement between Iran and the USA.

Lapid claimed on social media that the Iranian government would maintain power, its missile program would continue, and Tehran would be able to rebuild its nuclear program. He thus defined this as “Netanyahu’s complete failure.”
