We condemn in the strongest possible terms the violence and arrests suffered by members of the international delegation of the World Anti-Imperialist Platform during the peaceful march of May 12 in Nairobi.
Nothing can justify the use of force, tear gas, and repression against demonstrators exercising their legitimate right to freedom of expression and assembly. We express our solidarity with all those arrested, as well as with the journalists whose work was hampered by the confiscation of their equipment and the suppression of footage taken on site.
The freedom to demonstrate, to organize politically, and to denounce imperialist policies must be respected everywhere. We call on the Kenyan authorities to guarantee fundamental democratic rights, to fully investigate this violence, and to end all forms of repression against activists and organizations committed to justice and the sovereignty of peoples.
