US Imperialism Must Stop Electoral Interference and Get Out of Colombia!
Electoral democracy in Colombia is under grave threat by US imperialism. In the first round of the Colombian presidential election on May 31, the far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella secured 43.74% of the vote, while the progressive candidate Iván Cepeda obtained 40.9%. As no candidate reached the 50% threshold, a runoff election is scheduled for June 21. Even before the voting took place, President Gustavo Petro of Colombia continuously pointed out flaws within the Colombian electoral system. The crux of the matter is that by the software developed by Thomas Greg & Sons, a private corporation that manages the software and logistics of election vote counting, the official voter registry was changed from 41,421,973 people to 42,307,373 people on May 26, five days before the election, and the number of official polling stations increased from 13,742 places to 14,438 places. Furthermore, the number of official polling stations was increased from 13,742 to 14,438. This corporation maintains a collusive relationship with Espriella and the far-right parties.
Under the direction of US imperialism, the vicious electoral interference of the pro-US puppet regime of Ecuador is being accompanied. On May 1, the Daniel Noboa regime of Ecuador imposed a 100% tariff on Colombia. The real reason for imposing the 100% tariff, while slandering Colombia as a “drug cartel,” is to deal a blow to the economy of southern Colombia, which is the core support base of the Petro government. The vicious true colors of the far-right Noboa regime were revealed by its lifting of the tariffs as of June 1. On May 29, President Noboa made a reckless remark that the lifting of tariffs was in accordance with an agreement with the far-right Colombian candidate. Ecuador has been illegally and violently violating Colombian sovereignty. In March, the Ecuadorian military authorities, together with the US Central Command, bombed the Colombian border region, slaughtering dozens of peasants and civilians. US imperialism is manipulating Ecuador as a tool for internal interference and regime change against the Colombian people’s government.
Imperialist USA is fabricating the so-called “Blue Tide” through electoral interference, internal meddling, and sovereignty violations against Latin America. Ahead of the Argentine midterm elections in October 2025, the Trump administration openly backed the pro-US fascist Javier Milei regime and the far-right parties by signing a $20 billion currency swap. Anticipating the Honduran presidential election in December, it actively intervened in the Honduran presidential race in November by pardoning Juan Orlando Hernández, the former Honduran president, far-right politician, and real drug cartel boss. During the Chilean presidential election period, US President Donald Trump publicly endorsed José Antonio Kast, who has a very close background with the Augusto Pinochet pro-US fascist regime, praising him as a “very good man.” Meanwhile, when Noboa succeeded in reelection in April 2025, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro fiercely criticized the election as an “shameful fraud.”
The interference of US imperialism in the Colombian presidential election is part of a vicious campaign of oppression against Latin America. Since the beginning of the year, imperialist USA has kidnapped Maduro, the head of the anti-imperialist people’s government of Venezuela, and Flores, a prominent female activist, and has been illegally detaining them until now. The campaign to isolate and suffocate Cuba is deepening day by day, and tariff bombs against progressive and reformist governments, internal interference, and murderous atrocities under the pretext of the “war on drugs” by the US Central Command are being openly carried out in the Caribbean. The fundamental reason for disrupting and manipulating the “Pink Tide,” which is the reflection of the popular will of the Latin American people, into a “Blue Tide” through electoral interference and fraudulent elections is to re-colonize Latin America. Where there is oppression and exploitation, there is resistance and struggle. It is justice and a necessity for the Latin American people to overthrow imperialism and fascism by their own strength and to create a people’s government. The World Anti-Imperialist Platform will stand on the side of the people of Colombia and Latin America advancing toward independence and justice, hastening a new world of global independence, lasting peace, and democracy.
