Syria state TV: Israel strikes Syrian military airfield

A military airfield in northwestern Syria came under attack by fighter jets in the early hours of August 18.

Syrian state media, citing a military source, reported that Israeli forces carried out the airstrikes. Israel declined to comment on the report, AFP reported.

State TV said Israeli aircraft carried out eight airstrikes on the runway of Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Idlib province, northwestern Syria, near the Turkish border. No casualties were reported, but the strikes caused material damage, according to the report.

The facility has been out of operation since 2012 and is currently occupied by troops from Syria’s Ministry of Defense.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britain-based conflict monitoring group, said Türkiye, a key backer of the Syrian government, is rebuilding the airbase. A Turkish delegation reportedly visited the airfield several days ago as part of the reconstruction efforts.

Israel has sought to curb Türkiye’s growing influence in Syria. Israel has previously carried out airstrikes believed to have been aimed at preventing Türkiye from supporting efforts to strengthen the Syrian government’s air capabilities.
