On Thursday, July 30, 2026, around 5 p.m., a horde of police officers in multiple vehicles descended on the headquarters of the Communist Party of Benin, located in Gbèdégbé (13th District of Cotonou).
Without a legal warrant, they forced their way into the premises, surrounded the building for hours, harassed the members present in the hall, and demanded that they vacate the premises, etc.
When asked about the reason for such behavior, it was claimed that the police had received information that the meeting between Deputy Guy Marius SAGNA and civil society (called by the Alliance for the Fatherland and Pan-Africanism), which had been blocked, was to be moved to the PCB headquarters. Yet the police should have known that Deputy SAGNA was still at the hotel and had not left the premises.
The Communist Party of Benin strongly protests what it considers an unprecedented affront against its members, and an unjustified violation of the integrity of its legal headquarters.
The Communist Party of Benin wishes to remind everyone that its consistent practice has always been to defend the vital interests of our people, to defend democracy and the lives of the people of this country; that in this capacity it has given much through its members, in generosity and in sacrifice to this country, and in particular with regard to the establishment of democracy in Benin. It therefore deems incomprehensible and unacceptable the unjustified assault on its headquarters yesterday, in the absence of the commission of any previously established criminal act and without a valid legal warrant.
The Communist Party of Benin believes that, in the current delicate circumstances our country is going through, faced with existential threats coming from all sides that require the unity of all patriotic and democratic forces, we must keep a level head and not give in to excesses.
