On September 2, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Egypt for the first time in ten years and he stated his opposition to interference by external forces in the West Asian region.
On the same day, President Xi Jinping made the remarks during a summit meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at Al-Ittihadiya Presidential Palace in Cairo, Egypt, stating, “regional countries in strengthening dialogue on peace and security, exploring the building of a new security architecture for the Middle East, and taking their future into their own hands.”|
He also pointed out, “a comprehensive approach should be adopted to advance common security in the region and that given the multiple hotspots in the Middle East and their close interconnections, comprehensive solutions should be pursued,” and, “The Palestinian issue remains at the core of the Middle East question and should never be overlooked or marginalized.”
In particular, he stressed, “The international community, especially external powers, should abandon double standards in the Middle East, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional countries, and safeguard regional peace and stability.” The remarks are interpreted as being directed at the USA.
Following the talks, the two leaders witnessed a signing ceremony for cooperation documents in various fields, including the joint construction of the Belt and Road, artificial intelligence (AI), the economy and trade, and industrial and supply chains. A China-Egypt Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was also issued.
Egypt, along with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, is a major non-NATO ally of the USA and maintains close military and economic relations with the USA. It also played the role of a mediator during the US-Iran war. In 2024, it became a full member of BRICS.
President Xi Jinping’s visit to Egypt followed the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held earlier in Kyrgyzstan.
President Xi Jinping is also scheduled to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, on the 12th and 13th.
