Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump held a summit on the morning of September 24.
According to Xinhua News Agency, commenting on Xi’s state visit to the United States and the China–US summit, Xi said, “Exchanging visits in less than half a year is unprecedented in the history of China–US relations,” while Trump described the visit as “a great visit.”
Xi stated, “In May, President Trump and I agreed to build a constructive China–US relationship of strategic stability. This new framework reflects the realities of China–US relations as well as our expectations for the future. It marks an important step toward finding the right way for our two countries to coexist.”
He added, “The new consultations between the two sides’ economic and trade teams, which produced new joint arrangements, are good news for businesses and people in both countries, as well as for the global economy. I hope both sides will meet each other halfway, remain committed to mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, and promote continued stability and improvement in China–US economic and trade relations.”
Xi also noted, “China and the United States are both major powers in artificial intelligence (AI). While there is competition between the two sides, there is even greater scope for cooperation. We should each play to our strengths rather than guard against each other. We should maintain human control over AI technology, uphold a people-centered approach and the principle of advancing AI for good, and ensure that AI serves human progress.”
On the Taiwan question, he emphasized, “China’s position on safeguarding national reunification and territorial integrity is very clear. I hope the US side will maintain the correct position of opposing ‘Taiwan independence’ and handle the Taiwan question prudently, laying a solid foundation for China–US strategic cooperation and the development of bilateral relations.”
Trump stated, “The United States and China are both major powers. President Xi and I are good friends and maintain close and in-depth communication. Under our leadership, US–China relations will surely develop well. The two countries’ economic and trade teams have held new consultations and achieved new outcomes. Both sides should continue dialogue and reach better agreements. AI concerns the future of humanity, and the United States and China should maintain dialogue and strengthen cooperation in this area.”
During the summit, the two presidents also exchanged views on major international and regional issues, including the situation in West Asia, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula.
Regarding the war between the United States and Iran, Xi said, “China supports the United States and Iran in returning to the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.’ I hope both sides will return as soon as possible to resolving problems through dialogue and negotiations, reach a comprehensive agreement that includes the nuclear issue, and achieve peace.”
