Editorial: Youth against Fascism: Francken, We Are Not Cannon Fodder!

Our speech at the Fête des Libertés – Festival of Liberties in St Quentin: In Belgium, our teenagers received a letter from Minister of Defense Theo Francken, a separatist and nationalist. In this letter, military service was sold like you sell a new car or kitchen on promotion. A attractive salary of 1,800 euros, housing, food, and supervision. A nice brochure, nice packaging, a nice speech. But behind the packaging, what is there? There is the militarization of youth. 1,500 young people answered the call, and Belgium has turned them into young soldiers. Military infrastructure, military villages, housing, kindergartens, and shops are being built. Belgium wants to increase the number of soldiers by 2030 and recruit an additional 2,000 teenagers. And some are already talking about reintroducing compulsory military service. There are people who say: “It’s good, it will teach discipline and respect.”

For what wars? Last year, in this exact spot, I recalled several episodes from our history. I spoke about our comrade Julien Lahaut, national secretary of our party, who was assassinated in 1950 after shouting “Long Live the Republic!” in the Parliament during the swearing-in of King Baudouin. Some time later, Lahaut was shot dead in front of his house, on the pavement. I also spoke about Congo, about Belgian colonization, about this royal propaganda that claimed that Belgium had brought work, economic progress, and civilization to the Congolese.

And facing these lies, one man, Patrice Lumumba, stood up to tell the truth: “Monseigneur, what you say is untrue. Your country, Belgium, chops off the hands of my brothers and sisters because they do not produce enough rubber.”

Lumumba condemned colonialism, massacres, exploitation, and terrible working conditions in the mines. He was gruesomely slaughtered because he spoke the truth, because he wanted true independence for his Congolese people. And it must also be remembered that the uranium used by the USA to make the bombs for Hiroshima and Nagasaki came from Congo, which was under Belgian rule. This is what imperialism is. This is also what capitalism is when deployed on a global scale: death, plunder, exploitation.

But today I especially want to develop a point that I had already discussed last year: our children, our youth. I asked a simple question that we had to ask ourselves and our children: what are you going to do when they come knocking on the doors of your houses, when they hand weapons to your children, and when they tell them: now you are going to do your military service? What will you do when they want to send our children to the front as cannon fodder? I repeat today: what are you going to do?

But the youth see it clearly. They are disgusted by the world that “we” leave behind for them. Youth is not meant to die in NATO wars. Youth is not meant as cannon fodder for the imperialists. Nor is youth made to be exploited by capitalism from adolescence onward. We pulled our children out of the mines, and today the bosses put them behind supermarket registers at fifteen. Is this their progress? Is this their future?

Through the military budget, which has more than doubled, the government takes money out of the workers’ pockets—from hospitals, pensions, education, social security, and benefits. They cut into life to finance death. We are told that NATO protects peace. That is not true. Through NATO, war broke out in the Donbas. Through NATO, the genocidal state of Israel slaughtered the Palestinian people and attacked Lebanon, while the USA fed and armed the fascist regime of Netanyahu. NATO is the armed wing of the USA and Western imperialism.

And today we see the flames of a world war fanning up. World War 3 is no longer an abstract threat. It is being prepared before our eyes, through military budgets, through propaganda, through the militarization of minds, through the curbing of youth. Today fascism is no longer at the back of the garden, no longer at the door. The door is open. And who opened this door? Capitalism has two arms: its right arm, fascism, and its left arm, social democracy, which opens the door and even rolls out the red carpet for fascism.

Lenin taught us that we must advance step by step. First of all, we must know who our main enemy is. In Belgium, we must fight our own imperialism. In Belgium, we have nuclear bombs in Kleine-Brogel. We have NATO military bases and the NATO headquarters in Evere. Since the very beginning of NATO’s creation, there has been the false pretext of the Russian threat launched by the Western media. But Russia is not our enemy. Let us support the countries that resist imperialism. Let us support all the countries in the world that, each in their own way, refuse the domination of the USA and its allies.

We say clearly: NATO out of Belgium! Belgium out of NATO! Dissolution of NATO!

We haalden

zekerheid, in uitkeringen.

Allereerst moeten we weten wie onze belangrijkste vijand is. In België moeten we ons eigen imperialisme bestrijden. In België hebben we

kernbommen in Kleine-Brogel.
