Almost 50 universities in the USA started encampments in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. On the global scale, there are over 53 ongoing encampments.
A central demand of protesters is for universities to divest from any companies that are advancing Israel’s military efforts in Gaza, and in some cases, from Israel itself.
The demands are different from campus to campus, such as “Stop doing business with military weapons manufacturers that are supplying arms to Israel”, “Stop accepting research money from Israel for projects that aid the country’s military efforts”, “Stop investing college endowments with money managers who profit from Israeli companies or contractors”, and “Be more transparent about what money is received from Israel and what it’s used for”.
Today, over 100 students were arrested by the police at Northeastern University. The police cleared it as ‘an unauthorized encampment’.
Biden condemned the protests saying, “this blatant antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous – and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country”.
