South Korean Unification Ministry to Review Repatriation of Ahn Hak Sop

On the August 22, the Committee for the Repatriation of Mr. Ahn Hak Sop (the Committee) reported that on the 20th, the Ministry of Unification in Republic of Korea (ROK or South Korea) had expressed its intention to review the repatriation of Mr. Ahn Hak Sop, an unconverted long-term prisoner and a war veteran.

Earlier, the Committee had delivered a press statement and a notice to the Ministry of Unification urging cooperation in facilitating his repatriation. On the 20th, Mr. Ahn attempted to return to his homeland through Panmunjom but was blocked by the military authorities.

In its written response, the Ministry of Unification stated: “In the past, following the North-South Joint Declaration in September, 2000, 63 unconverted long-term prisoners who wished to go to the North were repatriated. We are aware that there are still those who wish to be repatriated, and that due to their advanced age, time is running short. The government will continue to review this matter.”
