Dominican Republic Authorizes Use of Its Facilities by US Forces

The visit of US Secretary of Defense (Secretary of War) Pete Hagseth to the Dominican Republic has led to Washington receiving approval to use air force bases and airports within the country. With this approval, the US can now conduct operations such as aircraft movements, cargo and personnel transport, and refueling at these facilities.

On November 26, Dominican President Luis Abinader announced at a press conference, “We have authorized the United States to use restricted areas at the San Isidro Air Force Base and Las Américas International Airport for a certain period of time.”

Hagseth stated that the Dominican Republic had approved a short-term deployment of US forces, calling the country an important strategic partner.

The Trump administration has been seeking military cooperation with Caribbean nations, including the Dominican Republic, as part of its efforts to increase pressure on Venezuela.
