Driven by an aggressive, uncompromising Zionist-imperialist policy, the United States has relentlessly marched toward this conflict, prioritizing the regional hegemony of Israel over global stability, international law, and the democratic will of its own citizens.
To understand the 2026 events, one must look at the preceding decades of relentless hybrid warfare designed to isolate Iran and subjugate the broader Middle East. The goal was to strip Iran of its regional allies, leaving it vulnerable to direct military intervention. This campaign of isolation was coupled with a diplomatic offensive designed to buy Arab complicity. The heavily coerced “Abraham Accords,” for example, are talked up as peace treaties, but underneath the surface, they were transactional arms deals and diplomatic bribes designed to isolate the Palestinian struggle and forge a unified, US-backed anti-Iran axis out of compliant Gulf monarchies.
However, the question remains: why would the United States pursue a foreign policy that entails endless trillion-dollar wars, the destruction of its global standing, and the alienation of the global majority? The answer has to do with a particular class stratum that wields disproportionate power and has utterly compromised American democracy.
US foreign policy in the Middle East is not driven by an objective calculation of American national interests, nor does it reflect the desires of the American working class. Instead, it has been effectively hijacked by a pervasive, highly organized Zionist lobby.
This domestic network exerts an unparalleled, almost totalizing stranglehold over the US legislative and executive branches. Through massive campaign financing, political intimidation, and the relentless smearing of critics, this lobby ensures that US policy aligns perfectly with the most extreme, expansionist elements of the Israeli state.
Billions of dollars flow unquestioningly in direct military and economic aid to Israel, and carte blanche political cover is provided for illegal settlements, all at the behest of this foreign lobby. Elected representatives in the US prioritize the militaristic ambitions of the Israeli apartheid state over the economic and security interests of their own people, making theirs a democracy in name only.
However, although the lobby has triumphed in getting the US embroiled in the war with Iran, the geopolitical blowback has proved disastrous for these architects of the war.
The worldwide economic impacts of the 2026 Iran war have been devastating. The disruption of global energy supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a brutal international economic crisis. Long-established trade routes that normally relied on the Hormuz strait are being permanently changed. Spikes in oil prices have led to rampant global inflation, destroying the purchasing power of the working classes across the Global South and the West alike. Even countries ever so far removed from the conflict have had this chaos brought home to them in economic terms. Ordinary citizens worldwide are paying the price for a war engineered by this poisonous special-interest lobby elite.
Beyond these effects on ordinary people, when you look at the state-level changes, they are simply mind-boggling. The US military budget used to be around $700 billion in 2022—already a very large number—but just four years later in the present, the Trump administration has asked Congress for $1.5 trillion, potentially more than doubling it in this brief span of time! The effects of this massive inflation of the military budget in the first place will have intensely negative economic effects because it will focus the economy on unproductive manufacturing—like bombs, tanks, and other engines of destruction—rather than productive manufacturing, such as medical equipment, tractors, and other engines of production. And obviously, if this were approved, it would signal that the country will expand the war and bring more conflict to other parts of the world. The world is not blind to what the massive inflation of the US military budget represents.
With such reckless militarism, some historic shifts have already started to occur in the regions affected by this imperialist warmongering. Recognizing that the US-Israeli axis respects no sovereignty and possesses an unquenchable appetite for regime change, regional powers are establishing their own alliances, such as the pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. On the other hand, it has also caused some splits, such as the UAE leaving OPEC and entering into closer coordination with Israel and the US. Increased rivalry, market divisions, and militarism within the region are ensured.
If there is one silver lining in this madness, it is that the nature of Zionist-imperialism has been exposed to the world as never before. Although this well-resourced and powerful elite has an international reach and the means to punish the opposition that dares to speak against it, the Iran war has forced the governments and populations of the world to reckon with the consequences of Israeli-American unilateralism. Even under circumstances where critiques are hushed and suppressed, the voices against it are becoming more frequent, growing louder and bolder.
Marxists of the present day must nevertheless be bold and take up the challenge of this opposition. They must take up the issue with their publics and clarify the nature of this era of constant militarism—whose effects are not just quarantined away in a distant land but are affecting all of us here and now in real terms—so that we may claw back some of the independence that is lost each time we concede our livelihoods to the whims of imperialism.
