Iran’s Khamenei: ‘US proposal for nuclear talks by “coercive government,” not negotiating’

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal to negotiate Iran’s nuclear weapons program, calling it a “unilateral demand by the powers.

According to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, on March 8, speaking at a Ramadan meeting in Tehran attended by the senior government and civilian and military officials, Khamenei emphasized that “Some coercive governments insist on negotiations. Such negotiations aren’t aimed at solving issues. Their aim is to exert their dominance and impose what they want” and that “The Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly not accept their expectations.”

In response to Trump’s letter to Khamenei the previous day, Trump had previously threatened military action against Iran if Tehran refused to negotiate over its nuclear program.

Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018, during his first term, arguing that the agreement reached under his predecessor, President Barack Obama, offered economic rewards to Iran without fully stopping the threat.
