The delegation of the World Anti-imperialist Platform visited El Salvador from Nov 11 to 15, meeting with various organizations including the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), the Nacional Coordinadora Intergremial Rafael Aguiñada Carranza (CIRAC), and the Unitary Federation of Unions of El Salvador (FUSS) to discuss the current war situation surrounding the Caribbean and the formation of Defense Brigades. On the 15th, the delegation visited historical sites to reflect on El Salvador’s revolutionary history.
During the meeting with the FMLN, the delegation stated, “We are now in the World War 3. As the strategic patience of the DPRK, China, Russia, and Iran makes it difficult for World War 3 to fully escalate, imperialism is targeting Venezuela and Latin America, provoking a second Caribbean crisis.”
They added, “Practical actions to support and defend Venezuela are not limited to Venezuela alone; they are for the anti-imperialist forces of Latin America and the world. Today, the most important anti-imperialist struggle is the concrete political struggle to defend Venezuela.”
A key FMLN representative said, “Please convey to President Maduro that we are fully prepared. El Salvador, Venezuela, and Cuba have helped each other in difficult times; we are brother nations that have faced crises together,” pledging to defend the Bolivarian Revolution and resist US imperialist military aggression together.
The General Secretary of FUSS stated, “Under the Bukele regime, fascist tendencies have intensified. Fifty percent of workers are working under conditions without proper protection.” He continued, “El Salvador is a dictatorial state. Even if people die in prison, the situation cannot be known. We are aware of at least 455 deaths. Even when the bereaved form organizations, they are forced into silence,” highlighting the severe fascist conditions in El Salvador.
He further emphasized, “Though our country is small, it has a big heart and will continue the culture of resistance to protect the peoples of Latin America. Just as we fought against Spain during the colonial period and opposed the military, we will continue to fight for the liberation of our Americas.”
The Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen (MUPI), a non-profit civic cultural institution and museum established in 1996, displays the history of the January 1932 uprising and massacre, the activities of Archbishop Óscar Romero, and the events of the 1980–1992 civil war.
The San Salvador Cathedral is the place where Archbishop Óscar Romero was shot and killed by a right-wing military organization during mass on March 24, 1980. Following his death, El Salvador entered a 12-year civil war.
The delegation also visited the tomb of Shafik Handal and held a commemorative moment.
Handal served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of El Salvador from 1973 to 1994 and was part of the FMLN’s top leadership during the civil war. He continued to serve as General Secretary until his passing after the FMLN’s political consolidation.
