According to foreign media, on the afternoon of January 17, thousands of people, including Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, participated in a protest in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, holding the Greenlandic flag and demonstrating against US President Donald Trump’s pressure for Greenland’s annexation.
This was the first large-scale protest in Greenland since Trump openly revealed his ambitions to annex the territory.
Participants marched toward the US consulate, chanting “Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)” and singing traditional Inuit songs.
Protesters carried signs and banners with slogans such as “Yankee Go Home,” “Greenland Is Already Great,” and “NO Means NO.”
The New York Times described the demonstration as a rare sight in Nuuk, a city with fewer than 20,000 residents.
Meanwhile, in Copenhagen, Denmark, thousands gathered in the city hall square, chanting “Hands off Greenland” during a protest.
On the same day, Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on eight European countries participating in joint military exercises in Greenland, with a 10% tariff starting February 1 and a 25% tariff from June 1.
