Europe discusses deploying NATO military assets in Ukraine

European countries are reportedly considering deploying NATO military assets to Ukraine with the pretext of helping ensure the country’s security.

According to the Financial Times on April 2, a proposal to deploy a force using NATO’s command and control structure to Ukraine is being discussed among European nations, with governments from around 30 countries involved in the discussions, which are being led by Britain and France. The United States is not formally involved.

Meanwhile, NATO’s military assets could be utilized in EU-led operations or missions, but this requires unanimous approval from NATO members.

Some European countries remain cautious. That is because US President Trump is reluctant to intervene in Ukraine.

Any deployment of forces in Ukraine that utilizes NATO’s command and control structure would involve the United States, a NATO member and key player, but the Trump administration has refused to directly participate in any European-led mission.
