On April 4, the delegation of the World Anti-imperialist Platform (the Platform) joined the demonstration against the establishment of a NATO headquarters in Florence, the largest city in Tuscany, Italy. Local residents and anti-imperialist organizations including the National Anti-NATO Coordination (Coordinamento Nazionale No NATO), chanted slogans from “No NATO in Italy,” “NATO out of Italy,” “Disband NATO!”.
A member of the National Anti-NATO Coordination said, “We are struggling in front of the barracks where the NATO command center is planned to be built. It is bound to be the first target in the event of a war. We must fight against the US and NATO occupation”.
One activist at the rally said, “Our taxes are our money. The floods and disasters keep happening, but the Meloni government is not doing anything about it, only forcing us to buy private insurance. The government pretends that poverty is our fault. Since 2008, wages in Italy have fallen by 9%. One in four Italians is poor.”
After the rally, the protesters marched through a nearby residential neighborhood. The neighborhoods they marched through the popular housing, built by workers after World War II when fascists bombed the buildings.
