India Successfully Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile

India has successfully test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

On August 21, according to AFP and the Times of India, India’s Ministry of Defense announced the previous day that it had successfully conducted the launch test of the nuclear-capable IRBM.

The missile, named Agni-5, was launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in the eastern state of Odisha.

The Agni-5 is the latest version in India’s domestically developed Agni missile series, which dates back to the 1980s. It is equipped with advanced navigation and guidance systems for high accuracy, and is reported to feature warhead propulsion technology.

According to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), India currently possesses 172 nuclear warheads, while Pakistan holds around 170.
