On 21 November, the delegation of the World Anti-Imperialist Platform (the Platform)met with representatives of the Workers’ Party of Chile (Partido del Trabajo de Chile) in Santiago, Chile, to exchange views on the current international situation and discuss practical approaches for joint action.
The Workers’ Party of Chile was founded in the wake of the Estallido Social (“Social Outburst”) of October 2019. Triggered by a 30-peso subway fare hike, the Estallido Social developed into a massive popular uprising, as long-standing social and economic inequalities accumulated over decades ignited widespread public anger.
Jorge Gálvez, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Chile, reflecting on the events of 2019, explained that “spontaneous movements alone cannot produce the decisive political action needed to challenge the country’s entrenched dependent capitalist system. We founded the Party because we needed a leading, class-based, and principled progressive force capable of providing correct guidance.”
He further described the Party’s objective as “building a powerful social movement grounded in an independent, class-oriented vision, and rebuilding the popular movement through this struggle.” He added that it is essential to “develop an internationalist policy in cooperation with friendly forces around the world who share our commitment to defeating US imperialism and its allied forces.”
Gálvez expressed strong support for the Paris Declaration and the three major goals of the Platform, calling them “the most scientifically grounded line for this era.” He conveyed the Party’s desire to work closely with the Platform. He also criticized the Communist Party of Greece’s “Imperialist Pyramid,” stating that “they are making enormous mistakes at a critical moment,” and warning of “the Trotskyist tendencies in their line.”
Agreeing with the assessment that the current situation—defined by US imperialism—is becoming a “Second Caribbean Crisis,” he expressed full support for the conclusions of the 9th International Anti-imperialist Conference released on October 22. He noted that the Workers’ Party of Chile is actively engaged in struggles inside Chile to provide political and military support for Venezuela.
Finally, he reaffirmed the Party’s intention to participate in future Platform’s events and contribute to the global anti-imperialist movement in every way possible.
