Military Coup in Guinea-Bissau Nullifies the Presidential Election

On November 26, the military in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, staged a coup, detaining the incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and seizing control of the country.

This coup, a forceful seizure of power, took place just one day before the official announcement of the presidential election results where the people voted.

The “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” led by Brigadier General Denis N’Canha, declared it had seized power, following a gun battle near the presidential palace in the capital, Bissau.

The coup measures focused on halting the presidential election process, which had taken place on the 23rd, in addition to closing the borders and imposing a night curfew.
