Is the Lee Jae-myung Government Trying to Board the Same Ship as the Ruto Fascist Regime?
1. On May 13, National Assembly Speaker of the ‘Republic of Korea’ (South Korea, hereinafter ‘ROK’) Woo Won-shik is visiting Kenya. The diplomatic delegation led by Woo entered Kenya on the 13th, held meetings with the ‘ROK’ embassy and companies operating locally, and will carry out official schedules including a summit-level meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto and meetings with the Kenyan parliament on the 14th, followed by visits to ‘ROK;-supported infrastructure sites and energy cooperation complexes on the 15th, before returning home on the 16th. The primary objective of this trip is to secure key mineral supply chains. Just as the earlier visit to the Netherlands was aimed at semiconductor collusion, the Kenya visit seeks to secure stable access to strategic minerals such as rare earths while enabling The ’ROK’ corporations to gain a dominant position in large-scale infrastructure projects including nuclear power plant construction in Kenya. The pro-Chaebol Lee Jae-myung government is directly moving to open the way for comprador conglomerates to advance into Kenya and seize resources. It is truly pathetic to see the steps of Woo Won-shik, who once participated in the student and social movements. To think this may be the final chapter of his political career evokes even pity at such a miserable end to his life.
2. This episode clearly demonstrates that the Lee Jae-myung government is actively integrating itself into the imperialist order. On the 11th and 12th, the “Africa-France Summit” was held in Kenya. This summit was an imperialist plot orchestrated by French imperialism, which was expelled from West Africa and the Sahel states, to use East Africa and Kenya as a strategic bridgehead for domination and plunder across Africa. It is no coincidence that Woo Won-shik followed the path taken by French President Emmanuel Macron. Meanwhile, what kind of regime is the Ruto government? It is a brutal fascist and murderous regime that massacred more than 130 Kenyan people with live ammunition during the anti-neoliberal protests of 2024–2025. The Lee Jae-myung Democratic Party government is not only tolerating the illegal and violent arrest and detention of former President of People’s Democracy Party (PDP) Lee Sanghun and PDP International Committee member Song Danbee by the Ruto fascist regime, but has even actively responded to the vicious “protests” of the Kenyan embassy in the ‘ROK’ by forcibly dispersing the PDP’s political speech rally and lawful political activities through violent police action. The Lee government is now discarding the safety, human rights, and constitutional rights of its own citizens while carrying out a beggar’s diplomacy disguised as “pragmatic diplomacy.” This is a moment that starkly exposes the humiliating true nature of the Lee government.
3. The Lee Jae-myung government must immediately and officially demand the release of Lee Sanghun and Song Danbeei, and thoroughly guarantee the lawful political activities of the PDP as protected by the Constitution. The Lee government, which came to power through the force of the December uprising, is now colluding with a fascist murderous regime, suppressing political party activities, and effectively admitting that it is no different in essence from the Yoon Suk-yeol insurrectionary fascist forces. The reason why U.S. imperialism designates the ‘ROK’ and Kenya as part of a “Non-NATO Ally,” and why the imperialist Macron traveled through the ‘ROK’ in April and Kenya in May, is obvious. It is because they seek to use the ‘ROK’ and Kenya respectively as bridgeheads for domination in East Asia and East Africa and as forward bases for wars of aggression. We will never tolerate the crimes of the Lee government, which is acting in league with imperialist and fascist forces that commit aggression, massacres, destruction, and plunder across the world, and we will resolutely fight against them to the end. United firmly with progressive people around the world, we will surely defeat imperialism and fascism through anti-imperialist and anti-fascist struggle.
